Steffich Fine Art will present a new show by international award-winning photographer Steven Friedman that reveals the pristine natural beauty of the world’s forests.
Opening on Friday, June 27, Windows Through the Forest celebrates the sense of wonder and appreciation for the natural world that is most often only glimpsed in a fleeting moment.
“We take the viewer to explore remote and inaccessible pristine forests, with format and composition that allows one to feel as though they are behind the lens with Steven, standing beside him in the forest,” gallery owner Matt Steffich said of the large-scale prints.
“Steven’s carefully selected compositions remove the chaos from the forest, bringing design, pattern and the dance of colour to the randomness of nature. To capture the images, he travels to remote locations around the world, sometimes hiking 20 kilometres to barely accessible territory and working with extreme patience. It is not uncommon for him to stay on-site for many days to capture just the right light, waiting long periods for the rain to stop, the wind to still and the fog to lift.”
The vibrant colours in Friedman’s work are the result of incredible patience, careful planning and years of photographing the same forests. He only takes photographs when the conditions include soft overcast light, trees at their peak of colour and no wind. Finding the conditions for this combination sometimes causes him to come back to the same location year after year until the photograph is right.
“Steven’s talent for capturing the natural beauty of the world through his expansive, evocative landscapes can’t help but bring you into the moment: the crispness of the air as the sun rises, the stillness of the autumn leaves between breezes, the vibrancy of peak colour,” Steffich said.
An opening reception is on Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. and the show continues through July 10.
