JACQUELINE ANNE BOOTH

August 13, 1954 – March 20, 2009

Jacky was born in Epsom, England and, with her daughter Clea, was a long time resident of Salt Spring Island, British Columbia. Jacky died very suddenly and unexpectedly while visiting with her family in Florida.

Jacky was dedicated to preserving the natural ecology of Salt Spring and the marine ecology of the west coast of Canada. She was a member of the Advisory Environment Committee for the Salt Spring Island Trust and worked tirelessly to maintain the sense of community which was so important to Salt Spring life. She was a founding member and unfailing volunteer for several local environmental conservation initiatives. She was one of the founders of Fulford Elementary School’s Nature Club, sharing her fascination with life in the ocean with a generation of school children on Salt Spring.

Jacky, as principal of Jacqueline Booth and Associates, was a highly respected and acknowledged expert in the management of coastal and marine biological resources, consulting to a wide range of federal and provincial government departments and environmental organizations. Jacky was a pioneer in the application of GIS to this science.

Jacky had a great capacity for generosity, and shared all she had unstintingly with those around her. She was always there to help, and her sharp mind and technical expertise were precious island commodities. A devoted mother, daughter, sister and friend, Jacky will be missed greatly by her daughter Clea Booth Mihalik, a student at Gulf Islands Secondary School, her parents Jim and Margaret Booth of Toronto, her sister Gillian and Gillian’s partner Ed, and her nieces Jackie, Maggie and Heather Vandermeulen. She was pre-deceased by her brother John.

Jacky’s life on Salt Spring Island was filled with loyal friends by whom she will always be remembered with love.

A celebration of Jacky’s life will take place on Salt Spring Island and will be announced in an upcoming issue of the Salt Spring Driftwood newspaper.
