Dorothy Apple nee Hibberd

Dorothy Apple, nee Hibberd

April 18, 1925 (Toronto, Ontario) –

January 22, 2014 (Salt Spring Island, BC)

The only daughter of Arthur Hibberd and Marguerite Joncas Hibberd,  Dorothy was pre-deceased by her four brothers and her parents.

She is survived by her two daughters and sons-in-law, Lyn Joncas (Jean-Pierre)  and Alix Whitfield (Clive).

Dorothy achieved her Bachelor of Arts  from the University of Toronto and her Masters in Library Science from Washington State University.

Dorothy retired to Salt Spring Island in 1991 after thirty years teaching special education  in inner city Toronto and 6 years teaching Inuit teenagers  in Holman Island (Ulukhaktok)  and Spence Bay (Taloyoak) NWT.

Our mother loved her books, her music, her painting and her sculpture.

Five years ago, at the onslaught of her illness, Dorothy  was  determined to continue her life until the end in her own house overlooking her own bit of paradise, Twilight Island in Ganges Harbour.   She managed to remain at home until two days before her passing at Lady Minto Hospital, on Salt Spring Island.

Lyn and Alix wish to thank everyone who was so kind and supportive during their mother’s last years of life: Dorothy’s doctors, David Woodley and Magda Leon and their receptionists, the entire Beacon Home Support staff, the Public Health Nurses, the oft-visiting ambulance teams, the Lady Minto Hospital staff and the excellent  emergency room doctor and staff who helped mother so much at the end.

Our mother will be loved and remembered always.

Having shared a portion of our mother’s full  and very rich life we have learned  to make the most of our own lives with those we love.

Mother requested that there be no memorial services.
