A long-awaited supportive housing project on Salt Spring’s Drake Road has seen modular units comprising its construction arrive on the island and in the process of being set up on the site.
The first units were transported to 161 Drake Rd. on Sunday, Feb. 23 from vacant land on Beddis Road where they have been stored.
The 32 units of supportive housing — and four additional affordable rental units — will arrive and be lifted by crane into place, BC Housing said, and with favourable weather construction is expected to be completed within six months. The project was first announced under a “fast tracking” statutory immunity plan in early 2022. Courtenay-based Muchalat Group is the general contractor.
Salt Spring’s Capital Regional District director Gary Holman said BC Housing expressed they planned to utilize wells recently drilled on the property for water, rather than any possible connection to the North Salt Spring Waterworks District’s system that could be forthcoming as that water provider plans to lift its connection moratorium.
