Scrabble event funds more important than ever

By JILL TARSWELL

For SSI Grand(m)others to Grandmothers

The Salt Spring Grand(m)others to Grandmothers Annual Scrabble Fundraiser is fast approaching and we’re inviting you to be part of the fun.

Bring a friend or make new ones between 2 and 4 p.m. on Tuesday, March 4 and Thursday, March 6 at Salt Spring Inn, where we’ll have games set up for you to play. Our final games and silent auction are on Saturday, March 8 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Harbour House.

AIDS/HIV is still a rampant and deadly disease in the world, and in sub-Saharan Africa the latest data shows that 2,000 to 3,000 people are infected weekly. African grandmothers are still on the front lines, raising their grandchildren after their own children have died. Children and young women are most at risk.

The Stephen Lewis Foundation’s Grandmothers Campaign supports grassroots projects in health, education, social justice and income generation. The future of Africa depends on the resilience of their children, and the children, in turn, on the resilience of their grandmothers.

The past few weeks have been turbulent. Following the Trump administration’s freeze on international assistance and the dismantling of USAID, our partners, many of whom rely on U.S. funding, have already seen significant and devastating impacts for their programs and communities. We are more grateful than ever for your support. We are fighting to protect community-led responses fuelled by decades of unwavering determination of Canadian and African grandmothers to support health, human rights and community expertise, all essential to building a safer, more just world for everyone.

We look forward to seeing you at our week of games. Enjoy good food, fun and friendship supporting extraordinary women doing extraordinary work. Can’t make it? You could donate to our page at grandmotherscampaign.org.
