Preliminary results for Salt Spring’s fire district election have been released, and officials are confident incumbents Rollie Cook and Mary Lynn Hetherington, along with Darryl Martin, will be seated at the annual general meeting (AGM) set for Monday, April 13.
Apart from the possibility of “a vote or two” moving after further review, returning officer Anthony Kennedy said, Monday’s election results for the Salt Spring Island Fire Protection District (SSIFPD) will be functionally the same as numbers released Sunday, April 12.
Cook, first elected to the board in 2017 and serving as its chair since the end of 2021, received 275 votes in the preliminary count; Hetherington, with nearly a decade on the board, tallied 262. New to the board will be Martin, with the most votes of any candidate: 292, according to preliminary figures.
David Courtney, who sat on the board a single term, received 76 votes in the preliminary count; Jenny McClean, who has served on a SSIFPD committee for more than a year, received 75.
Kennedy will review the totals and declare an official result at the district’s 66th AGM Monday; elected trustees will then begin a three-year term in office.
