Sea Star Recovery BioBlitz

Salt Spring Islanders can participate in a Citizen Science project to survey the beaches of Salt Spring Island for juvenile sea stars.

Sponsored by the Salt Spring Trail and Nature Club and the Salt Spring Ocean Stewards.

Training Session A: Thursday, August 9 – 8:00 am Ganges Harbour directly in front of Harbour House.

Training Session B: Friday, August 10 – 8:30 am shore beneath Fernwood Dock.

Training Session C: Saturday, August 11 – 9:00 am Baker Beach. At the foot of Baker Road and down the stairs.

The BioBlitz: Should take place within approximately 1 hour before and 1 hour after low tide. The low tides (Fulford, other locations similar times) are: Friday, August 10: 0.27 feet at 9:47 am
Saturday, August 11: 0.42 feet at 10:35 am
Sunday, August 12: 0.97 feet at 12:07

How To Sign Up: Please RSVP David Denning via email (ddenning@telus.net) providing the following information: Your name, email, and phone number Training session you’d like to attend – either A, B, or C.

What to bring: Dress appropriate to an exploring a rocky beach on that day – including hat and sun cream. Pencil and book, or hard surface to write on. Bring a tooney and a small ruler (for size reference) and a camera/iPhone (If possible). As you will be looking closely under rocks, some people use knee pads such as those used in construction or gardening. Food, water, and anything else to make the exploration more enjoyable (binoculars?)
