April 19, 1946 – March 13, 2009
After a long and valiant battle with multiple types of cancer, George Johan Hume is now at peace and has joined the spirits of the many golf fanatics who have gone on before him.
George was born in Rotterdam and came to Canada with his war bride mother Johanna (Visser) Hume to join his father Arthur Scott Hume in Ontario. He spent many years in the horse racing industry around North America, was a former member of the United Steel Workers of America, and dabbled in several careers during his life – most recently he spent many long and happy hours tending the grounds, attacking broom, enjoying nature’s beauty and (most of all) playing on Blackburn Meadows Golf Course. A celebration of George’s life will be held at Blackburn later in the Spring and in Niagara Falls, Ontario.
Pre-deceased by his father and sister Lawrenza, in Ontario, George leaves his beloved daughter Serina Hedley (Paul), mother Johanna, brothers and sisters Marie, Theresa (Mike), Georgina (Robert), Lorraine, Patricia, Roy (Sue) and Arthur, plus his very cherished grandchildren, Kaitlin, Ethan and Sarah, and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. On Salt Spring he leaves behind his loving partner of over 14 years, Anne Williams, his little golfing buddy Atreyu and his little princess Shekinah. He will be sadly missed by their mother and father Sarah Jane Giddy and Kyle Parks, James Giddy of Vancouver, and his many friends on Salt Spring, especially his ‘Blackburn family’, as well as many friends of Bill W. here and in Ontario. Also missing their ‘papa’ are his precious critters – Queenie, Bear, Burton and TiWa.
Many thanks to all who helped George and I along his journey, especially Dr.’s Hansie De Kock and Bob Crossland, all the wonderful and caring nurses and staff at Lady Minto, Sharron McKinnon and the group at Home Nursing Care and the wonderful volunteers at the Bessie Dane Foundation and Hospice, especially Kathleen, Bill and Mark. Blessings to all of you.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society, the Bessie Dane Foundation and Hospice, the Lady Minto Hospital Foundation or to the Blackburn Meadows Junior Golf Program would be greatly appreciated.
