Jean Knight passed away December 22, 2014 on Salt Spring Island at the age of 91.

Music played the central role in Jean’s life. Born in Sussex, England February 17, 1923. Her childhood was in Hove where she started playing violin at  6 and won a scholarship to Brighton School of Music at 8. At 16 she won an open scholarship to the Royal College of Music and studied under Isolde Menges, a pupil of Leopold Auer and obtained music degrees.

In 1944 she joined ENSA playing in Waldini’s band touring France & Germany entertaining the troops. The trombone player was her future husband Tony. They both freelanced in London and Jean played with Sadlers Wells Opera & Ballet and BBC Orchestra. Emigrated in 1955 to Canada joining the Vancouver Symphony as principle second for 17 years, CBC orchestra and a founding member of Baroque Strings of Vancouver.

Jean moved to Salt Spring Island in 1975, taught many students, and played with Victoria Symphony & Sooke Philharmonic.  She was involved in many volunteer services including Save the Children’s Fund and a hospice worker for 20 years. She loved gardening, camping, travelling, outdoor activities and was very independent.

Predeceased by husband Tony & sister Muriel, she leaves sons Barry (Brenda) Charles (Linda), grandchildren James, Teresa, Karen, great grandchildren Cameron, Thomas, Nathan, Luke and nieces Susan & Anne.

A Service will be held on Jan. 25, 2015, 2  pm  at All Saint’s Church, Salt Spring Island.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Save the Children’s Fund.
