Born: November 12, 1928 – Southampton, England, died suddenly September 26, 2010 in Antigua, W.I.
Emigrated to Edmonton, Canada in 1937. Attended the University of Alberta, B.Sc. 1950, M.Sc. 1951 (Geology), University of Illinois, Ph.D. 1953 (Clay Mineralogy). After graduation, Pat worked for the Alberta Research Council.
In 1951, Pat married Grace Young, with whom he enjoyed 58.5 happy years. They had 3 children, Jimmy (deceased at 2.5), Sheila and Michael.
In 1957, Pat and his family moved to Tulsa Oklahoma, working for Carter Oil Research Department for 7 years, returning to Calgary, Canada, where he worked for Imperial Oil Ltd. and Panarctic Oil. In 1971 he moved to Canmore, AB, where he went into geology consulting and teaching at SAIT. At this time he and his wife Grace bought a motel in Canmore which they ran for 5 years.
While in Canmore Pat was a town councillor for one term and town Mayor for two terms, 1977-1983.
Grace and Pat moved to Salt Spring Island in 1983. Pat served two terms as a trustee with Islands Trust, and was a library volunteer for many years.
One of the joys of his life was planning and taking holidays to many parts of the world. His delight in his latest vacation place, Antigua, led to the choice of holding his funeral and burial in Antigua on October 1, 2010 at St. Paul’s Anglican Church.
A memorial service will be held at All Saints by the Sea on October 23, 2010 at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Pat’s name to the Salt Spring Foundation.
