TOM VOLQUARDSEN

May 29,1930 –

September 20, 2010

Tom died suddenly in the early afternoon in Scott House at Summerside on his way to have a swim.  He is mourned by his loving wife Ruth, his family in Denmark, his beloved Baha’i community and friends from many walks of life on Salt Spring.

Mildly shy all his life, at the same time he had deep quiet dignity.  He was seldom critical or judgemental of those near to him or people he didn’t know at all. As a husband Tom was nurturing and strengthening.

Born in Canada and brought up in Denmark, Tom trained under a master painter at a technical school in Odense.  There he was employed doing restoration work in churches and scenery painting in theatres.  In his life as a painter and paper hanger here and earlier in Toronto he had many repeat customers whom he was always pleased to see again even after he retired.  He had so enjoyed his time with them talking about music and the art in their homes.

His first job on Salt spring in the 1960’s was doing the cartoons for the Driftwood.

Tom’s hobby was carving and his work is in the Bank of Montreal,  the United Church and recently was exhibited at the Gallery of Fine Arts in the village.  He loved his time spent teaching others and out of those classes came some very skilled carvers.

A service will take place in the United Church on Friday September 24, 2pm.

Donations gratefully received to a charity of your choice.
