Edward Poole

Edward Poole

November 17, 1933 – December 9, 2012

On December 9th Edward Poole surrounded by love passed from this life with Bill, his partner of 26 years (and husband of three years), at his side.

Born of humble beginnings in 1933, Edward, through exceptional talent and tenacity, overcame countless obstacles to become a highly successful well respected member of the community. At the age of eight Edward developed a flair for fashion; using a simple throw from the sofa and his mother’s old Singer, he crafted a fine housecoat for himself. At 14 he pulled apart a malfunctioning Model T engine and brought the Ford back to life. A year later he vanquished the town bully!

With a slight age adjustment Edward illegally enlisted in the Canadian Air Force narrowly escaping a career in the Chemainus sawmill. While stationed in France he met and married Monique, a woman who would shape his life in an extraordinary way, and together they produced three highly talented children: Ariane, Laurent, and Corinne.

In 1963 Edward took his love of fashion and design and made dreams come true, opening a women’s couture clothing shop in Vancouver, Monique Gabin/MG1. By 1986, 23 stores spanned BC and Alberta.

Edward fell deeply in love with Bill Turner in 1986 and together they moved to Salt Spring Island where Birdsong B&B opened and thrived.

Edward will be remembered for his extreme loyalty to and love for his dear family, his countless friends, and his beloved Fred and Ethel. As a father he was a catalyst who encouraged his children to be independent, expecting them to step up to the plate and participate in their own future. As a friend his loyalty was unquestionable; whether shy or regaling stories from his diverse past, he was the life of the party! To the world he will be remembered for his strength of character and his unfailing belief that anything can be accomplished through determination, courage, and authenticity.

Left behind to hold his memories are his husband Bill; former wife Monique; children Ariane, Laurent (Jenny), and Corinne (Pat); seven grandchildren Armand, Madison (their mother Joni), Electra, Sienna, Ria, Luly, and Bea; brothers Doug (Penny), Bob (Lorraine); close friends Bob and John, Sharon and Theresa, Allison and Bob and so many more that were close to his heart.

Special thanks to those who made Edward’s last days comfortable and full of warmth and love: Dr. Crichton, Sue Banks, Christine Mauro and care team Amy, Debbie, Terri, Maja, Dawna, Jovani and Helen.

There will be a celebration of life for Edward on Saturday, January 26, 2:00 pm at Flying Dreams Studio, 112 Sun Eagle Drive, Saltspring Island.
