April 1, 1980 – August 24, 2008

It is with great sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of our beloved son Wilf.

Growing up around his father’s auto repair business on Salt Spring Island gave Wilf a love and appreciation for antique and hot rod cars and trucks. Through his shop experience Wilf had become an accomplished custom painter, pinstriper and artist.

Missing Wilf greatly are his father Bruce Smith (Shirley), mother Marg Hunt (Bob), sisters Beverley Wells (Simon), Sheri Smith (Corey Johnson), Mandy Hope (Nick), grandparents Jack and Elsie Lamont and niece Jordyn Wells, and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends.

Wilf, we hope you are lowriding in your

‘63 Impala ragtop in a better place.

We love you and miss you.

Crystal (Chris) Wade

January 20, 1920 – July 28, 2008

My Mother passed away peacefully in the early dawn after

a brief illness. Born and raised in England, she returned

on many occasions to visit with her sister Myrtle, family

members and friends. Following her service in WWII with

the British Forces she immigrated to Ontario, Canada.

Settling in Caledon, she established a successful horse

business and continued to be a celebrated rider. After a

change in life’s direction, Mum moved my brother Michael

(deceased in 2006) and I to Pender/Saltspring Island,

British Columbia. She enjoyed the island life and became

involved and well known in the communities. My wife (Karen),

daughter (Rachelle) and I were fortunate enough to

have Mum live on the same street in Black Creek, Vancouver

Island for the last nine wonderful years.

My mother will also be lovingly remembered and sadly

missed by grandchildren Christopher, Jessica, Jordan, as

well as relatives, friends and all those who knew her. Mum

lived everyday with a strong willed passion and concern

for everyone. She will be remembered for her wonderful

sense of humour and her unique perspective on life. May

we all be blessed to know a person like her; she will forever

be in our hearts and memories.

There are just not enough words to express how much I

will miss you Mum. All my love, your son Philip.

We gratefully acknowledge the special care given by Dr.

Ness and the 3rd fl oor staff at Campbell River Hospital.

There will not be a service as per her request.

#300 Mountain Rd.

(off Isabella Pt.),

All who knew Sue are welcome.

Phyllis Maxine Holmqvist (Walde)

At 2:00 a.m. on Thursday, the 17th July, Phyllis Maxine Holmqvist (Walde) died peacefully in her home surrounded by loved ones.

Her passing marks the end of a life rich with family, friends and adventure. The family would prefer not to receive gifts or flowers, but we invite you to choose a tribute that seems appropriate to you; donations to the Cancer Society, ArtSpring or another charity of your choice would also be welcome. We would enjoy hearing about what you have done and appreciate all your support.

Phyllis will be remembered for her courage, her enthusiasm for life, her great love of music and her unwavering ability to bring people together, as she continues to do even now. She will never be forgotten.

Allan Robert (Bob) Barker

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Allan Robert (Bob) Barker on July 11, 2008 at Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria.

He was born on Canada Day in Hazelton, British Columbia in 1924. He always ensured the maple leaf was flying on his birthday. There are many people that will miss him deeply, especially his loving wife of thirty years, Barbara.

He is survived by six children: Wendy (Jeremy) Fry, Jim (Barbara) Barker, John (Barbara) Barker, Pam (Keath) Seeton, Lori (James) Wilkinson and Nancy (Gordon) Wright. His first wife, Shirley, and his son, David, predecease him. Bob leaves 12 grandchildren all of whom enjoyed their time with Gramps on the Salt Spring Island farm. He also leaves one great-grandchild in Australia.

The bridge table is missing a fourth.

F. Marion Andrew (nee King)

With sadness we wish to announce the quiet passing of Marion on the afternoon of July 10 at Lady Minto Hospital.

Marion will be dearly missed by the family: her sons Jim and Bob and many nieces and nephews. She was the last of a close knit family of brothers, Don and Bill, and sister, Pat.

A humanist of boundless energy. A great ‘people person.’ For some, a second mother. For many, always there for support. Always community minded and a strong supporter of the Arts.

Marion started an arts school in Winnipeg 50 years ago, which is thriving today. She helped start the Fulford OAP and later, with her dear friend Hedvig’s legacy, built the addition to Fulfurd Hall for the OAP.

In the words of others, Marion:

“Touched a lot of people”

“A pillar in the community”

“Gracious”

“A fighter”

and a great knitter.

All were Marion, always with a smile, always in service.

Great thanks to the Lady Minto staff and Dr. Leavitt for their wonderful care. A special thanks to the Bessie Dane Foundation for their love and attention to Marion in her last days.

The world is a better place for our Marion. A celebration of Marion’s life will happen in the fall on Salt Spring Island.
