W. DENNIS Oâ??HARA

Dennis passed away, gently and in peace at home, after a long battle with cancer. In his last months he was constantly surrounded by loving caring friends and family. Visits, phone calls, emails and kind thoughts from many others would have him say he was “a lucky man”. True to his Irish ancestry, he remained brave-hearted and steadfast to the end. Then, as he was wont to do, he left us on his own schedule.

Dennis was predeceased by his mother and father. Later, in 1977 he lost his infant son. He is survived by his wife Gloria, his brother Warren and nephew Sean and many caring and much loved cousins in Calgary.

At his request, his ashes will be spread over his favorite hikes and special places on his beloved island. He asked that there be no service for his passing. Therefore, an intimate memorial gathering will take place at his home with family and closest friends to remember and celebrate a full, passionate life.

A very special thank you to the nurses and home support staff that worked diligently and with care to fulfill Dennis’s wish to die at home. This thank you is also sent out to his physicians Dr. Crossland, Dr. Reznick and his naturopathic doctor Chuck Alsberg.

May all beings be free of suffering. May all beings know the great good fortune of their great nature.

May all beings be at peace.

Mona Doerksen

It is with great sadness that we announce Mona passed away at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria. She is survived by her husband Hank, daughter Linda Hardy (Bill), sons Lindsey (Cheryl) and Dana (Cher); grandchildren David, Denise, Justina & Merissa and great-grandchildren Miah, Josh, Hope, Emily & Evelynn. Mona is pre-deceased by her loving granddaughter Nikki.

Her upbeat and fun loving approach to life will be sorely missed by all that knew her. She was extremely dedicated to her family. During her working career she built a real loyalty to the R.C.M.P. Retirement saw her as a dedicated volunteer with Besse Dane, Greenwoods and Lady Minto Bingo. Mona would also take a gold medal as a 41 year cancer survivor.

We would also like to extend our sincere appreciation to all the staff at Greenwoods, Lady Minto Hospital on Salt Spring Island and the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria who helped us in every possible way. Dr. Leavitt, as well as all the doctors and nurses at both hospitals are a real credit to their profession.

There will be no service by request. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the BC Cancer Society or the Heart & Stroke Foundation. A celebration of life will be held at our residence at 732 Beaver Point Road, Salt Spring Island from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. on Friday, June 6, 2008.

Christina Mary Pattinson

Christina was born in Dauphin, Manitoba on Sept. 21, 1915. She was raised in Burnaby and trained as a teacher. In 1940 she married Dick Pattinson in Ottawa. After the war the couple moved to Alert Bay where they lived, worked and raised their three children.

In 1977 Chris and Dick chose Salt Spring Island as their retirement home. Christina continued to be an active and community spirited person. She enjoyed many activities and opportunities that her new home afforded – The Painter’s Guild, the Trail & Nature Club, Salt Spring Island Sailing Club, Salt Spring Island United Church, various exercise groups, her garden and proximity to her family. She recently joined a community singing group.

Christina passed away on May 22, 2008 in Lady Minto Hospital. She is lovingly remembered by her husband of 67 years, Dick, her daughter Jane and sons Howard and Alan, four grandsons and sister, Tot. She will also be missed by many other friends and relatives who enjoyed her positive spirit.

Irving (Neill) Armitage

…passed away quietly at home on May 15th, 2008.

A memorial service to honour his life will be held on Saturday, May 24th at 2:00 p.m. at the Salt Spring Community Gospel Chapel.

Friends, colleagues, students past and present are invited to join us.

Isabel Margaret Fitch (nee Chipman)

Isabel passed away peacefully at Foothills Hospital on May 8, 2008. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Max, infant daughter Wendy, and two sisters Bev Hall and Kay McManus. She will be greatly missed by her four children and their spouses: Ted & Val, Jack & Quil, Peter & Mary Ellen, and Neil & Jennifer Almond, and her nine grandchildren Ryan, Melissa, Greg, Kyle, Jessalyn Almond and Hannah, Noah, Zoe and Isaac Fitch, as well as by her sister Barbara Swiggum and family and many other relatives and friends.

Isabel was born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, 1912. She graduated from the Royal Victoria Hospital of Nursing (Montreal) in 1938. During the war she served in England, Belgium and France as a lieutenant with the Nursing Sisters in the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps. She was awarded the Oak Leaf, a medal of valour, by King George VI for returning to a hospital that was under enemy fire to help with the evacuation of the wounded.

After the war she was stationed in Whitehorse where she met and fell in love with Max, to later marry in Calgary in 1948. They lived in England, Germany, across Canada, Yaounde, Africa and retired on Salt Spring Island for 18 “wonderful” years, surrounded by great friends, until Max’s death on May 11, 1999.

She then moved to Calgary to be close to her family. Any comment Isabel would ever make regarding her life was only that “She had been very fortunate and had lived a wonderful life!” To all who knew her, she was a rare, pure spirit who through her own incredibly positive outlook brought joy and happiness to all around her.

On May 11, 2008, 9 years from the date of Max’s passing, a warm and memorable memorial service was held for Isabel at the Southern Alberta Pioneer Lodge. I think she would have been pleased with her send off, and our toast to her life well lived. We believe Isabel’s spirit will live on with all of us and that even heaven will be truly blessed by her presence!

For those who desire, donations in memory of Isabel may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Winniefred E. Nanning

Great sadness goes with the announcement that the Earthly Life of a great person has transcended. Lived with courage and passed on with courage. Humble, always there for others in many ways.

Born in Indonesia, surviving the Japanese Camps, came to Holland to finish school and study medicine. After practising for many years, the place for retirement became Salt Spring Island, having visited many times before.

I would like to thank everyone involved with her care. Gratitude for the support of friends near and afar; Salt Spring is a special place.

All of life is interconnected and ongoing.
