Thomas Davey Little (Tom) passed away peacefully on Dec. 12, 2012 at the Lady Minto Hospital surrounded by his family. Tom is survived by his 5 boys and their wives (David and Donna, Daryl and Rhonda, Brian and Doris, Tom and Diane and Duane and Leah) 15 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren. Also left to cherish his memory are 3 brothers, 1 sister and 1 brother-in-law. He was predeceased by his wife Mildred in 2005 and grandchild Clark in 2003. Tom was born 3rd child of 9 children at Donovan, Sk. The family moved to Leroy, Sk. because of the dirty 30’s to homestead. Tom and Mildred also lived at Snowden, Sk., Saskatoon, Sk., New Westminster, BC. and Mill Bay, BC. Tom and Mildred retired to Salt Spring Island in 1986. They both had a passion for gardening and Tom was well-known within the horticultural community wherever they lived. Tom had a small market garden on Salt Spring Island. Hobbies Tom enjoyed included hunting, trapping, stamp and coin collecting and reading. The Little family would like to give an extra big thank-you to Dr. Reznick and the hospital staff at Lady Minto Hospital for their care and professionalism which went far beyond their call of duty. The service will be at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday Dec. 20, 2012 at the Community Gospel Church.

Edward Poole

November 17, 1933 – December 9, 2012

On December 9th Edward Poole surrounded by love passed from this life with Bill, his partner of 26 years (and husband of three years), at his side.

Born of humble beginnings in 1933, Edward, through exceptional talent and tenacity, overcame countless obstacles to become a highly successful well respected member of the community. At the age of eight Edward developed a flair for fashion; using a simple throw from the sofa and his mother’s old Singer, he crafted a fine housecoat for himself. At 14 he pulled apart a malfunctioning Model T engine and brought the Ford back to life. A year later he vanquished the town bully!

With a slight age adjustment Edward illegally enlisted in the Canadian Air Force narrowly escaping a career in the Chemainus sawmill. While stationed in France he met and married Monique, a woman who would shape his life in an extraordinary way, and together they produced three highly talented children: Ariane, Laurent, and Corinne.

In 1963 Edward took his love of fashion and design and made dreams come true, opening a women’s couture clothing shop in Vancouver, Monique Gabin/MG1. By 1986, 23 stores spanned BC and Alberta.

Edward fell deeply in love with Bill Turner in 1986 and together they moved to Salt Spring Island where Birdsong B&B opened and thrived.

Edward will be remembered for his extreme loyalty to and love for his dear family, his countless friends, and his beloved Fred and Ethel. As a father he was a catalyst who encouraged his children to be independent, expecting them to step up to the plate and participate in their own future. As a friend his loyalty was unquestionable; whether shy or regaling stories from his diverse past, he was the life of the party! To the world he will be remembered for his strength of character and his unfailing belief that anything can be accomplished through determination, courage, and authenticity.

Left behind to hold his memories are his husband Bill; former wife Monique; children Ariane, Laurent (Jenny), and Corinne (Pat); seven grandchildren Armand, Madison (their mother Joni), Electra, Sienna, Ria, Luly, and Bea; brothers Doug (Penny), Bob (Lorraine); close friends Bob and John, Sharon and Theresa, Allison and Bob and so many more that were close to his heart.

Special thanks to those who made Edward’s last days comfortable and full of warmth and love: Dr. Crichton, Sue Banks, Christine Mauro and care team Amy, Debbie, Terri, Maja, Dawna, Jovani and Helen.

There will be a celebration of life for Edward on Saturday, January 26, 2:00 pm at Flying Dreams Studio, 112 Sun Eagle Drive, Saltspring Island.

Josephine Booker passed away peacefully on Tuesday, 27th of November at Burnaby Hospital, sadly losing her valiant battle of the past few years with Parkinson’s Disease.?Jo is survived by her loving husband Tony, their three sons Timothy(Zora), Patrick (Debbie) and Nicholas (Cherie), and five granddaughters.

After meeting Tony in their native country of England, they emigrated to Canada in 1958, were married and began married life in tiny Markinch, Saskatchewan. They soon moved west: first to Kamloops where they started their family and later to Vancouver and Ladner to raise their three boys. A long love affair with the Gulf Islands led them to retire to Salt Spring Island where they settled into the relaxed but vibrant island life.?Jo was an advocate, a volunteer and an industrious worker for numerous organizations and causes. Her keen interest in both education and the arts led to a career on the Delta School Board, where she served as both Chairperson and Trustee for several terms, and on the Boards for Kwantlen and Douglas College, as well as the Delta Arts Council. Jo worked tirelessly with the Delta Naturalists as they strove to protect delicate natural habitat. In 1992, for her many accomplishments in public service Jo received a Confederation of Canada Medal.?Jo enjoyed her gardening, outdoor pursuits like camping and hiking, photography, beating her family at scrabble; and somehow throughout it all found time to indulge her passion for tennis, which she played expertly in competitive clubs.
