TARASOFF, Fred

On Tuesday September 17, 2024, Fred Tarasoff, age 80, passed away peacefully at the Gorge Road Hospital in Victoria BC.

He was born in Victoria and spent time in Montreal, Truro, Nova Scotia and again in Victoria.

Fred was a loving father, brother, son and friend. He has four children and three grandchildren.

His love for nature was readily evident in all that he did. Living off the land was a strong passion of Fred’s.

He was a very inventive man and loved to develop different entrepreneurial ventures.

He was very connected to the Salt Spring community – making many friends and impacting many lives during his 30+ years on the island.

Fred loved to play the bagpipes and spent a number of summers busking on the upper causeway. He was a stalwart on the causeway and many, many people had their picture taken with him. He is the inspiration of his son Stephen’s friend, who now busks during the summer months in the same spot Fred entertained so many.

He will forever remain in the hearts of family and friends.

  1. He was a lovely neighbour during the short time we knew him. A very entertaining character, so inventive and authentic. I know he loved dogs and the last conversation I had with him he was trying to figure out what kind of grass dogs loved the best.
I will always remember him marching across his meadow with his deer-hoofed walking stick.
    Rest in Peace Fred ❤️????

  2. So sorry to hear of Fred’s passing. I always hoped to meet him. We are now living in the cabin which he homesteaded in Nova Scotia in the early ’70s. My condolences to his family.

  3. I’ve just written a story about the most interesting person I’ve met in my long life. It is my friend Fred of course. I have a tiny framed Quixotic sketch/ a rear view of Knight riding his cayoose into the unknown that Fred gave me on a visit to Nova Scotia. The sketch sits on a shelf in my cupboards. It brings back so many memories. Bon voyage! my friend . . Valerie

  4. Many good memories of Fred, his love of nature, animals and his bagpipes. Fred was a true biologist and friend. When I asked a question his reply was about the story of the bear cubs in his back seat. His love of the land, the waters and the flora and fauna was reflected in his actions.
