Mallory Jones PRED

Mallory Jones Pred

1937-2015

Mallory Jones Pred died at home on Sunday, June 14, 2015. She spent her last days surrounded by close family and treasured friends.

Small, strong, beautiful, and busy on her feet, Mallory was in continuous motion: hiking, gardening, raking, sweeping, practicing yoga, cooking delicious food for family and friends. Busy off her feet too: knitting, painting, drawing, meditating, reading poetry, writing letters, listening intently, speaking with conviction and eloquence.

A longtime island resident, Mallory was born in New York City to Henry “Hank” Schubart and Barbara Joseph in October of 1937. During her teens, Mallory, her mother, and her younger sister, Linda, moved to California. After graduating high school, Mallory attended the University of California at Berkeley, San Francisco State, and the University of San Francisco.

At 22, Mallory married David Jones (Serva), a Berkeley musician, and had her first son, Martin. After the young couple separated, Mallory continued to pursue her studies and interests as a single parent, influenced and shaped by many of the new ideas, practices, and experiences of the era. She eventually earned a Masters in Psychotherapy before starting a private counselling practice in Berkeley.

In 1972, Mallory reconnected with Ralph Pred, an old flame. Happily, the two would go on to spend the next forty years creating a dynamic and committed life together. In 1979 the couple had a son, Noah. Eleven years later, drawn by the Schubart connection and the beauty of Salt Spring, the three moved north.

Settling into their Hank-designed Fulford home, Mallory’s lucid and eclectic aesthetic manifested in her careful placement of stones, plants, and artful objects, each one with a story, throughout her house. On the granite of the hill, a garden’s bounty was nurtured, blooming with flowers and filled with birds.

Radiating warmth, Mallory’s green eyes and smile were a fixture in the local community where she became a vital participant. An abiding lover of nature and engaged activist, she advocated passionately to protect the island from clear-cut logging, helped establish the Salt Spring Nature Conservancy, and worked to spark momentum for local public transport, contributing to many other causes along the way. A musical being, Mallory played piano and recorder from an early age, later in life discovering the joy of West African drumming. She went on to perform regularly with local drum group, Iroko – her husband Ralph often the first to dance.

Ralph predeceased Mallory in May of 2012. She leaves behind her sons Martin and Noah; her sister Linda; sister-in-law Sue and brother-in-law Lane; daughter-in-law Suzanne; nieces Willa, Michele, Emily, and Becky; nephews Tobias and Joseph; grandnieces Emma, Neva, and Linnea; grandnephews Sebastian and Clyde; great-grandniece Sophia; and her cat, Baloo.

Resilient, laughing, loving; honest and direct with her feelings; insightful and open-minded, Mallory was a wonderful and generous mother, wife, sister, and friend. She will be deeply missed.

The family would like to thank Dr. Beaver and his staff, as well as Karen, Sharon, and the rest of the nurses at VIHA for their compassionate care and support.

A farewell gathering will take place at Stowel Lake Farm on Sunday, July 12, 2015, at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Salt Spring Nature Conservancy.

Arthur Charles HOWARD

Arthur Charles Howard

Nov. 25, 1937 – June 3, 2015

It is with immense sadness that we announce the passing of Art (Artie) Howard on June 3rd at Lady Minto Hospital after a brief illness. Artie was born November 25, 1937 in the old Lady Minto Hospital and was raised on Saltspring.

Art will be remembered by old neighbours and Islanders for his years of supplying farm products from the Cranberry Road farm. He will also be remembered by many for his butter churning demonstrations at Ruckle Farm Days and also for his love of sharing a good story. His long service to the Rod and Gun Club as the official game weigh in station at the farm, has gone down in the annals of time for his rigid attention to game inspection, the rules and meticulous record keeping.

Art never married or had children of his own, but will be sorely missed by his many nieces and nephews with whom he shared his love and knowledge of hunting, the farm and it’s many animals.

He is predeceased by his father George in 1951, mother Winnifred in 2007, sister Alice in 1945 and brother Herb in 2002.

Art is survived by his two sisters, Florence and Winifred and two brothers Fred and Dennis.

A heart felt appreciation to the Beacon Care team who gave Art such great care at home and to the Lady Minto Team who treated him as one of their family.

No formal services will be held at request.

Muriel McLintock

Muriel McLintock

1918 – 2015

We are saddened to announce the passing of our mother Muriel McLintock at Deertrail Cottage in Duncan. Muriel is predeceased by her husband Charles, second husband Gordon, daughter Allison and sister Doris. She is survived by her son John (Beverly), her grandchildren Rob (Kaori), Ryan (Jamie); her great grandchildren Sofia and Kacie; and her daughter Alyce (Richard) and extended family Tamara (Richard); Mark (Jayne); and Justin.

Muriel was an adventurer and was blessed with many wonderful experiences while travelling around the world. She was an accomplished artist and in her later years she turned her talents to creating personal greeting cards in pastel featuring scenes of the Gulf Islands. She loved to play bridge at the Salt Spring Island Legion every week. Mom was easily recognized on the island as “the lady with the hats” as she seldom ventured out without adorning herself with one of her self-made hats featuring a colourful flower on the brim. She will be remembered for her elegance and class.

A heartfelt thanks to Dr. Gee, Margo, Liz, Tracy, Lorelei, Kathy, Shelly, Julie, Angela; and especially Michelle, Kari, Megan, Bridgette, T Jay, Nancy, and Recilda at Deertrail Cottage in Duncan.

A celebration of Muriel’s life will be held in Winnipeg. In lieu of flowers, donations to Salt Spring Island Search and Rescue Society would be welcomed.

John “Jack” David LANGDON

John “Jack” David LANGDON

1949 – 2015

With great sadness we announce the passing of Jack on May 31st.

Predeceased by his mother Dot in 1969, his brother Tom in 1980, and his father Jack in 1986. Jack is survived by his loving wife, Wanda, their three children, Tom (Jennifer), Chris (Sarah), and Jocelyn (Kory), and their grandchildren, Nolan and Mikayla. He is survived by his siblings, Gary (Paulette), Sue (Ian), Leigh (Corby), Leslie (Jack), and Joe.

Jack was born on March 9, 1949 in New Westminster to his parents, Jack and Dot. He was the eldest of seven children. He graduated from Gulf Islands Secondary School in 1967. He married Wanda in 1980 and they built a home on Long Harbour Road where they raised their three children.

Jack was incredibly hardworking, and thought of his logging and fishing co-workers as his second family. He was strong, generous, and selfless. Jack continued to exhibit incredible strength and courage as he fought to the very end. Though he wouldn’t admit it, Jack had a huge heart and cared solely about the happiness and health of those he loved. He will be forever remembered and missed by many.

A service will be held on Friday, June 5 from 1-4pm at the Salt Spring Legion.

In lieu of flowers or other gifts, the family kindly requests that any memorial contributions be made to help fight pancreatic cancer via Pancreatic Cancer Canada at www.pancreaticcancercanada.ca

Jean Alberta Holmes (nee Doerr)

JEAN ALBERTA HOLMES

nee DOERR

1918 – 2015

Jean passed away peacefully at the Lady Minto Extended Care Unit on Salt Spring Island Friday, May 29, 2015 at the age of 96. Although we are sad to lose her, we are thankful that she led a full and rich life and contributed in so many ways to her friends and community.

Jean is survived by her niece Betty, her stepson Donald [Judith], daughter in law Jane, grandchildren Pamela, Kenneth, Angela, and Marcus as well as six great grandchildren and family in Ontario. She was predeceased by her brother Sinclair, stepson Barrie and husband of 50 years, Marcus Holmes.

Born in Edmonton, Alberta, in 1918, Jean was brought up by her mother Margaret in Middleville, Ontario. After high school, she entered nursing training and graduated as a registered nurse from the Ottawa Civic Hospital.

With the advent of World War Two, Jean enlisted as an army nurse and served the troops of her country in Britain and on the continent in Belgium and Germany. Following the war she continued her nursing career mostly in northern Canada, Yukon and Northwest Territories. During this time she rose to the rank of Captain. While posted in Churchill Manitoba, Jean met and married Major Marcus Holmes [a widower].

In 1960 Jean and Marcus retired to Salt Spring Island where they both carried on a different and very active new life. She helped him realize his dream of opening up and developing a large piece of land on Isabella Point. They developed a fruit orchard and an experimented with a commercial peach orchard. For many years Jean became known locally as the “peach lady’ for providing beautiful fresh peaches for many of the Salt Spring residents.

Jean was also active in many other pursuits. She volunteered as a hospice nurse. Jean was a great supporter and one of the co-founders of Salt Springs` Trail and Nature Club in which she led many walks and coordinated bird counts. She was an active member of the local war nurses group.

Jean contributed greatly to her husband Marcus` political career when he was the Salt Spring representative on the Islands Trust in the late sixties and early seventies. During these hotly contested times, Marc fought to retain much of Salt Springs` rural character against overzealous developers some of whom looked at this beautiful island only from the aspect of making a profit.

We are grateful to the staff of the Lady Minto Extended Care Unit for their excellent care of Jean.

Jean led a remarkable life and will be dearly missed by her family and her many friends on Salt Spring and other areas of Canada.

A celebration of her well-lived life will be held June 27, 2-4 P.M. at the Harbour House Hotel, Salt Spring.

William Richard (Dick) PATTINSON

William Richard (Dick) Pattinson

November 20, 1915 – May 21, 2015

We are saddened to announce the passing of Dick Pattinson on May 21, 2015. Dick was born in Burnaby, B.C on November 20, 1915.  He was raised in Burnaby and trained as a radio technician.  In 1940 he married Christina Royal in Ottawa. After the war, the couple moved to Alert Bay where he worked as a radio technician on fishing boats and in logging camps for the next 30+ years. During that time he learned to fly and bought his own float plane in order to serve his customers better,  as well as his sense of adventure.

In 1977, Dick and Chris chose Salt Spring Island as their retirement home. Here, Dick continued to follow his interest in radios, enjoying the activities and friendships in the local ham radio club. Here too, he started sailing. In 1983 he began his annual adventure– sailing around Vancouver Island. He had so much fun that he did it again, and again. Fourteen times in total, usually leaving in June and returning about 30 days later.

He will be sorely missed by family, radio and sailing club members and the many friends, acquaintances and people he touched over almost 100 years along the B.C. Coast. Dick was a sailor, adventurer, businessman, radio communication expert, innovator, seaplane pilot, explorer and a gentleman. He was truly one of a kind and led a long, healthy, vibrant life that set an outstanding example for all of us.

He was a loving husband and father. Predeceased by Christina, his wife of 68 years and survived by his children Jane, Howard and Alan and four grandsons.

A celebration of his life will be held at the Salt Spring Island Sailing Club 2:00-4:00 PM on Sunday, May 31, 2015. Donations to Lady Minto Hospital in lieu of flowers.
