Margaret Bernice

Bainbridge

(nee Moore)

September 29, 1915 –April 23, 2014

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother & great grandmother at the grand age of 98 years young.

Every day, when asked how she was doing, it was “two thumbs up” and a smile. She never complained of pain, suffering or old age and in her last day, she finally said, “I am done”. She lived a great life!

Margaret was the second child born to John Arthur Moore & Jessie Lavina (nee Weeks), in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She lived in Kamloops, BC then Camrose, Alberta where she enjoyed her life there until the age of 85. Margaret shared many close friendships with her neighbors; they were like her other family. She enjoyed a career in the Alberta health care system, loved gardening and being a creative soul, was an avid potter known as “Embie” & in her late 70’s learned watercolour & china painting.

In 2001, she moved to Campbell River, BC to be closer to her daughter relocating to Salt Spring Island, BC in 2006 where she enjoyed residing at Braehaven Assisted Living & spending time with her great grandchildren.

Margaret is pre-deceased by husband–Ernie, sister–Doris & eldest brother-Bill. She is survived by: daughter, Gaynelle Lobbes (Tom) of Merritt, BC, step-son, Cyril Bainbridge (Lorraine) of Salmon Arm, BC, grandchildren, Trent Wallbank of Kamloops, BC, Noella Fraser (Mike) of Salt Spring Island, BC, 8 great grandchildren: Jake, Angus, Rachel, Gord, Emily, Mikaela and Ian Fraser, Jackson Wallbank, brother, Don Moore of Abbotsford, BC and her first great great grandchild (expected September 2014).

The family extends gratitude & thanksgiving to the staff at Braehaven , Lady Minto Hospital & Dr. Barclay, for the loving care provided over these last years and especially Jessica, Catherine, Jen, Monica & Jenny for being there on the last day. You were her family too! Special thanks to Maureen & Stacey for always taking the time & showing the love. Memorial tea will be held Saturday, June 7, 2014 2pm at the Harbour House Hotel, Crofton Room, on Salt Spring Island.

A book of memories has been set up by Hayward’s Funeral Service and condolences may be left at http://

Martin Williams

June 17th 1934 – April 10th 2014

Our wonderful Martin left us unexpectedly last week after seventy-nine great years. The kindest man in the world was a Father to Nick (Emily) and Rosalie, and a partner and best friend to Marie Beaudoin. The youngest of five, he outlived all of his siblings, and among many others close to him, he leaves behind Nick’s mother Jo Lundstrom (Nelly), nephews Oliver Coomes, Ian Ralston, and Evan Williams.

He will live on in the trees and garden he planted, the house he built, and the hearts of the countless people he touched. Martin, Dad, you will be dearly missed.

We ask that in memory of Martin, you do a random act of kindness and donate blood to the Red Cross in his name, as Martin was a Gold card blood donor. A celebration of life will be held in late May. Ads will appear to announce.

Robert Dan Callahan

ROBERT DAN CALLAHAN

June 26, 1928 – April 6, 2014

Dan was wired for a life of imagination and fire; a life fully lived was demanded by his DNA. He was intense and exploring in all parts of his life, and often joyful in new directions. He was Flaming Youth and sometimes abrasive individualist, but also he was life-time student, thoughtful observer, free spirit. He was strong and courageous, and even in the last few years of medical challenges, his strength and spirit were clear.

His hands could draw, express, repair, and soothe everything–he restored old motorcycles, cars, a wooden boat; he produced memorable photo projects through the years; his care of our cats was legendary; he worked with imagination and force on all that he wrote or did. He could always figure out how to solve electronic and mechanical problems; and could design anything from patios to lawnmower wheels to make them beautifully his own.

In the 1950s he was ship’s navigator and then deep-sea diver and underwater photographer in the US Navy. He left his Navy career to return to U of W and in 1967 began to teach English literature at SFU. In 1983, D.H. Lawrence’s Etruscans and also Moto Guzzis drew him to Italy, and we soon moved to an ancient Tuscan property that fulfilled dreams of both sociality and solitude. He was in his element, close to “paradiso” for his twenty-five years there.

He is survived by his wife Sharon on Salt Spring, with him for 50 years; his sister Beverley of Longview, WA; his children Patricia, Maureen, Sean, and Oona in Seattle and Matthew in Texas, also by their children. Those who can will come to celebrate Dan’s birthday and his life in late June.

An informal drop-by will be held on Sunday, May 4 at our home from 3-6 pm. Also condolences and stories may be added to the Book of Memories at Haywardsfuneral.com. Donation can be made to the Lady Minto Hosptial Foundation or the BC Cancer Foundation.

I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.

I feel my fate in what I cannot fear.

I learn by going where I have to go.

Elizabeth “Lorraine” nee Emmerson Dixon

Elizabeth “Lorraine” Dixon (nee Emmerson)

June 30th, 1948- April 2, 2014

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Lorraine, devoted wife of Tony, loving mother to Jonathan (Ashley) and Paula (Bill), and proud grandma to Hannah, Liam, Evan and Ella.

Born in Yorkshire, Lorraine trained as a nurse at St. James’ Hospital in Leeds and worked in Zambia, Kenya and England before coming to Canada in 1972. She lived first in Rainy River in North-Western Ontario and then in Hamilton, where she raised her family before resuming her career in nursing.

Lorraine moved to Hong Kong in 1994 and retired to Salt Spring Island in 2002, where she died peacefully at home after a courageous battle with cancer.

The family thanks Drs. Butcher and Beaver for their medical care over the last few months. Special thanks to the Home and Palliative Care Nurses, Community Health Care Workers and hugely supportive friends and neighbours who all helped ensure that Lorraine could be looked after at home.

A small private funeral will take place on Friday 11th April. Friends are invited to a Celebration of Life on Saturday 12th April from 3-6pm at 280 South Bank Drive.

If desired, memorial donations can be made to the Lady Minto Hospital Foundation.

John Gotthold Magnus

November 27, 1936 – March 29, 2014

John Magnus, son of Henry and Helen Magnus, was born in Luseland, Saskatchewan where he grew up on the family farm. He was studying Law for his Masters Degree at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. As an international scholarship student he fondly recalled many occasions befriended by Judge Sarah Hughes and especially the time at her home when she was hastily called to swear in President Johnson. It was a unique experience for John to participate in the J.F. Kennedy Assassination trial as a friend of the court and he often reminisced about it.  He was employed in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Amerada Hess Oil Corporation and became their legal counsel for their Canadian office in Calgary, Alberta.

John met his wife Ethel at Banff International Christmas sponsored by Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship. They were married in 1969 and John continued his legal practice in Calgary until 1988 when he retired to join his family on Salt Spring Island, BC. He is survived by his wife (Ethel, nee Johanson), four sons and one daughter: Jennifer Smith (Daryl), Nolan (Kate), Brad, Duncan (Haleh), and Chris. John was delighted by children and loved all his grandchildren: Timothy, Chelsey, Chloe, Lida, Lyla, and Heidi. He also leaves four brothers: Dave (Evelyn), Arnold, Ben, and Jim (Marilyn) and one sister: Miriam Jones (Jim).  John was predeceased by Baby Brother Arnold, sister Elsie Laing (Will) and brother Vern (Dorothy). His fondest memories were both of his Law practice and his farming heritage. He is sadly missed as we recall the good times.

A celebration of life will be held on

Saturday, April 12.

Internment will be at 11:00 am at Central.

The service will be at 2:00 pm

at the United Church,

Trevor James Murray

Trevor died in Vancouver after a long struggle with mental illness on March 20, 2014 at the age of 54. He thrived during his years on Salt Spring Island, from 1973 to 1977, and was GISS valedictorian in 1977. Trevor was larger than life and always made an impression on the people he met, and despite his own difficulties, showed great compassion for his fellow travellers. He will be missed by his father Michael, sister Brenda and other family members and friends. Donations can be made in Trevor’s memory to the Salt Spring Community Services adult mental health program.
