HANN, William Charles (Bill) passed away on Sunday, November 11, 2012 at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, after a sixteen-month battle with brain cancer. Bill is survived by his loving wife Maureen and his little treasures Alexander 6 and Samantha 4, as well as his Mum and Dad, Lavinia and Bob, sister Joelle, Maureen’s parents Dianne and Terry and her sister Mia and family.

Bill was born in Victoria on June 8, 1975 and the family moved to Salt Spring Island six weeks later. Bill attended elementary school on Salt Spring and later moved to St. Michael’s University School in Victoria. Following graduation, Bill attended Bishop’s University in Lennoxville, Quebec, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management.

After university, Bill learned to fly, then flew float planes in the Queen Charlottes, before going to the Maldives for six months. On his return to Canada, Bill flew with Harbour Air, Central Mountain Air and then achieved a life long dream of flying for WestJet.

Bill was hardworking and professional, yet always eager to help anyone in need, friend of stranger. His friendliness and wonderful, dry sense of humour made him friends wherever he went. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

No flowers please. Donations, if you wish should go to St. Michael’s University School Annual fund (year of 1993), WestJet Pilots Association fund, Christ Church Cathedral School Bursary fund, or the BC Cancer Society, all of whom have been incredibly supportive through this difficult time.

Lois Elizabeth

Shipley

Lois Elizabeth Shipley (née Leader) died November 9, 2012, aged 83.  She survived her husbands Ted Sisson and Bob Shipley and will be deeply missed by her family including her sons Kirk (Valerie), Rand (Karen), Chris and Ross (Sharon), her daughter Cathy as well as her grandchildren (Karl, Ian, Evan, Ben, Jenn, Randi, Connor, Hailey, Eric, Zeanna, Desmond, Myah) and great-grandchildren (Sean, Rhys, Erik, Kate).

Lois was free and youthful in spirit until the end.  She will be remembered for her candour and spontaneity, her quirky wit and quick intelligence, her sympathy for the underdog and the entire animal kingdom.  Her laughter could be heard above a crowd and will echo in the memories of all who loved her.  Lois was an original; the world is a duller place without her.

Her wishes were embraced by the poem, “To Remember Me” by Robert N. Test which ends: Burn what is left of me and scatter the ashes to the winds to help the flowers grow. If you must bury something, let it be my faults, my weaknesses and all my prejudice against my fellow man. If, by chance, you wish to remember me, do it with a kind deed or word to someone who needs you.   If you do all I have asked, I will live forever.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Dr. David Woodley and the people at Access Care Management who all went out of his way to ensure Lois stayed home for as long as possible.

A celebration of her life will be held near her home in the Spring.

Harry Peere

Williams – Freeman

July 16, 1923 – November 9, 2012

Capt. Harry Peere Williams-Freeman of Salt Spring Island, B.C. died peacefully at age 89 after a lengthy and devastating illness. Harry was born in Duncan, B.C. and moved to England in 1934 with his family. As a teenager he attended Blundell’s School and afterwards served in the British Army from 1941 to 1946 in the UK, India, Burma and West Africa. He then worked in Nigeria as a timber agent for the United Africa Co. He returned to B.C. in 1948 and was employed by the Inventory branch of the B.C. Forest Service doing fieldwork. In 1954 Harry enrolled in the Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada as a lieutenant. He served in Canada and with the U.N. in Pakistan in 1965. He returned to Canada to live in Halifax, where he retired in 1970. From there he moved to B.C. and worked nine years as the administrator for the Canadian Outward Bound Mountain School in Vancouver and Keremeos. He was instrumental and persistent in getting the government interested in acquiring his B.C. Heritage Site residence which is now known as the Keremeos Grist Mill. Harry strongly felt this property belonged to the public rather than private ownership. In 1981, in his 37 ft. sloop he named ALEC PEERE, he sailed from Vancouver to the Caribbean where he spent several years. Later on he enjoyed many years of extensive travelling and chartering his sailboat in the coastal B.C. waters.

He was a true character who marched to his own drum and his own eccentricities; a family man with a tender heart, a keen intellect and a dry sense of humour who was passionate about the outdoors, wilderness and historical conservation, classical and jazz music, reading, sailing, current affairs, history, physical fitness, travel and good conversation.

Harry is survived by his wife Valerie of Sidney, B.C., their 3 children Jennifer (Garry), Gordon (Brenda) and Rosemary (Stephen) and seven grandchildren. He is predeceased by their eldest son Alec and Harry’s sister Joycelin Dunlop of Okanagan Mission, B.C. A sincere thank you to the dedicated caregivers and health providers over the past many years and to Harry’s good friend Sally as well as other friends who have helped make his life better. He will be sadly missed.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Donations in Harry’s memory may be made to the Western Canada Wilderness Committee.

RAMONA (MONA) MAY

WARREN

On October 30, 2012 Mona passed quietly away in Ganges at the age of 84. Predeceased by her husband Wilf in 1987 Mona is survived by her daughter Dorothy (Russell), son Danny (April), several nieces and a nephew.

After moving from Calgary in 1951 Mona spent many happy years at the old farmhouse in Burgoyne Bay, where the door was always open and the coffee pot always on. You never knew how many people would be at Sunday dinner, and at Christmas there was only one rule – no one should spend Christmas dinner alone. After Wilf died Mona moved around the Fulford and Beaver Point area for several years, staying busy and involved with the community. She learned to drive at age 60 and thoroughly enjoyed the independence that gave her.

From 1989 to 2001 she was the Fulford Days “pie-lady”, organizing and running the pie stall. For a change of pace Mona moved up to Ganges and the last 13 years of her life were spent in the warm and convivial surroundings of Croftonbrook, where her passions for bingo and cribbage flourished.

A warm hearted and outgoing woman, Mona tackled life head on, facing adversity with a feisty strength. She will be sorely missed by her family and friends.

A gathering to remember Mona will be held December 1st at the OAP room downstairs at the Fulford Community Hall from 2:00 to 4:00 pm.
