Roy’s family would like to sincerely thank his caregivers: Dr. Woodley and his family, Maggie O’Scalleigh, Michele MacKenzie and Charlene Wolff for their compassion and dedication.

We will always be grateful to Maggie and Michelle for their long-term commitment, loyalty and love they provided to Roy and Muriel. It is because of them that Roy was able to live a beautiful, comfortable life on his farm.

A gathering was held this past weekend while distant family could be here.

Donations in Roy’s memory can be made to the Salt Spring Legion Branch 92, The Lady Minto Hospital Foundation, The Salt Spring Foundation or The Shrine Club #39 Gulf Islands.

Florence Dodwell

1918 – 2015

Florence Olga Dodwell died peacefully February 20th, 2015. Born in 1918 to Norwegian immigrant parents, Florence grew up in Ocean Park where she and her parents, sisters and brother shared a close family bond. After graduating high school with honours, she got her degree in teaching and, later in life, her masters degree. Florence was very proud to be a teacher. She taught at Centennial Highschool in Coquitlam, as well as various schools in Quebec, where she raised her only son Ken, with her first husband, Crom Donaldson.

In 1972 Flo married Charlie Dodwell and they moved to Galiano where they lived an idyllic life for almost 40 years. There, Flo taught elementary school and was very active with the Church, the Galiano Golf & Country Club and the Bridge community. Florence was also known for playing a mean game of Scrabble. Besides an avid love of travel and nature, Florence had a real soft spot for animals – especially for her beloved cats. ? ?

Flo will be remembered for her great sense of humour and constant positivity. She is predeceased by her son Ken Donaldson, husband Charlie Dodwell, sister Alice Fox, and brother Bill Claman. She is survived by her sister Myrtle Alan, grandchildren Jenny Wilson and Chris Donaldson (Beth), great-grandchildren Oscar and Angus Donaldson, and stepchildren Pat Dodwell (Vicki), Pete Dodwell, and Pam Beasley (Wayne). As Flo would say, ‘Life is what you make of it’. ? ?

In Memory of

Terry Ann McLees

Aug. 18, 1959 – Feb. 15, 2015

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Terry Ann McLees on Sunday February 15, 2015 at Lady Minto Hospital, Salt Spring Island, B.C. after a long battle with cancer.

Terry was born August 19, 1959 in Spokane, Washington.  She  is survived by her Mother Carroll Morand and her Father James McLees, two brothers Bruce McLees and Brian McLees, and her two sons Nick Imonit (Sandra Huitt), and Harrison Cowling.

Terry received her Bachelor of Science degree at Evergreen State University in Olympia, Washington.  She had been a licensed captain and enjoyed many years working on the ocean.  Terry had lived with her two sons on board a 38 foot Ingrid Ketch for 9 years.  She loved sailing and took part in many sail boat races.

Terry also loved horses and spent hours looking after and riding her own.

She cherished life, and everyone who knew her will have many wonderful memories of her friendship and kindness, as well as her spontaneity and zest for life. In 1998, she packed up her son Harrison in a 1967 Volkswagen Bus and drove from Salt Spring Island to Baja Mexico where they lived for a year.

For the last eight years, Terry worked at Island Savings Insurance, primarily as a Commercial Insurance Broker.  She always greeted members with enthusiasm and a big smile. It was her goal to have the members leave feeling happier after having had a conversation with her.

“Tonight a new star shines in the night sky; farewell to the beautiful spirit, Terry Ann McLees. A friend and co-worker, she was a radiant light, so full of joy and love and life. Her spark will shine on, though she will be greatly missed.”

At Terry’s request there will be no service. A big thank you goes out to Dr. Creighton, the nursing staff at Lady Minto Hospital, the homecare nurses, and home support caregivers.

Memorial donations can be made to a charity of your choice.

Marie Louise (Loes) Holland

Marie Louise (Loes) Holland

Nov. 12, 1922 – Feb. 14, 2015

A sudden end to a life well lived!

Loes Holland at 92 can be described as a world traveller, a global spirit, having explored close to 60 countries. Being her only daughter and child, Joy, I was very fortunate in sharing many travels with her. She so enjoyed planning them. Having an adventurous spirit combined with a zest for living, she was often seen as being an eccentric, gutsy and feisty character, with a unique wit.

Loes originally came from Holland where she was active in the resistance movement during WW2. She met and married my Dad, Gerry and lived in Toronto. There she enjoyed a very rich cultured life: music, art, and the opera. She told everyone she was “kidnapped” by her husband Gerry who chose Salt Spring Island for their retirement where she has lived for over 40 years. Loes “threw herself” into Island life here. She thrived on parties, the outdoors and the people. She soon came to know and love many islanders from all walks of life.

Her infectious enthusiasm, combined with high energy, started the tennis club for Parks and Recreation, where she taught endless hours of lessons to many of us. When she wasn’t on the court, she was trail blazing, hiking Salt Spring peaks for the Salt Spring Trail and Nature Club, of which she was a founding member. To honour my father and his love of hiking with her we arranged for a bench to be built and installed on a hiking trail. She will also be remembered working for the Lady Minto Hospital as an X-Ray Technician, where she looked after numerous patients.

Her more recent hobbies included attending the opera at ArtSpring, her interest in gardening, feeding the birds – Freddie, Fronzie and Fritzie, her beloved Pileated woodpeckers. She was also known for chasing cats and rabbits out of the garden but loooved dogs, and always had snacks for them.

Loes was fortunate to remain in her own home until the end – she was spared having to move to a “warehouse” as she put it. Salt Spring has offered her a long rich life. She will be remembered reaching out to many people and touching us in her own unique way.

And her spirit lives on!

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, 135 Drake Road, Salt Spring Island, BC on Wednesday March 11, 2015 at 10:30 AM with a reception following. Private burial will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Salt Spring Hospice / Bessie Dane Foundation. Box 521 Ganges PO, Salt Spring Island, BC V8K 2W2

C. Duane MacPhail

August 8, 1941 – February 6, 2015

It is with immeasurable sadness that the family of Duane MacPhail announces his passing from this earth to a place of wonder and joy with the Good Lord, and His many angels on the evening of February 6, 2015.

Duane’s greatest joy was his family: he believed he simply had the best. He was so proud of them all: His faithful and devoted wife and best friend of 50 years, Bonnie: son Shane (Dana) from Australia with grandsons Dylan (Monique) Keenan, granddaughters Charlotte and Teyah: daughter Shannon (Clayton Johnston) and their children Rory, Kiara and Shayce all from Salt Spring Island. Daughter Stacey (Sabrina) and grandsons Peyton and Crosby from Kelowna. Another ‘special daughter’, Rhonda from Australia was dear to him as well. Cousins Carol and Barb were more like special sisters.

Bonnie and family wish to thank first the initial responders here on the Island and the wonderful work of Dr.’s White and Morse, and then the exemplary care from all the staff at the RJH ICU staff. They were so efficient medically, but as important, very compassionate and helpful with Duane and the family.

We welcome friends to attend a brief and informal celebration of his life at the Brinkworthy Clubhouse on Friday, February 13 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the Heart Foundation or the charity of your choice.
